Stray Dogs - The Horror of Bangalore

Hi folks,

Some of you might have read the recent tragic incident that enraged many of us in Bangalore. Yes, a small girl was mauled to death by a herd of dogs. She was just there seeing what the dogs were up to. After the dogs had their feast upon some leftover meat from the butchery, these dogs saw this girl.   They came upon the girl and tear her into pieces eating her up. I know this would sound awful. However this description is needed to show to the world that, such incidents occur in Bangalore.

When I came to Bangalore, one of the first proverbs I heard about this place is that you get to see a lot of chicks and dogs. Chicks used to roam around in malls, cinema theatres in a group or with their boyfriends. I liked that part. However I was not prepared for the latter one – dogs. I am a pet lover, and I love dogs the most. But Bangalore contains a lot of stray dogs that at least once a month one gets confronted by a dog.

One year back something terrible happened to me. Due to my work I had to sit back late. By around 11:00 pm, I came to my bus stop and just needed to walk 500 meters to reach home. Within 100 m from my home, I heard a barking sound. I just stopped and looked to my left. What I saw was a pack of dogs. It also had a leader which looked ferocious enough to scare me. I started moving slowly towards my home without making any noise. These dogs started picking up scents. Then something diverted their attention. I then took the next cross street and ran towards home. I know I could have been bitten or probably mauled by these dogs. Because it was so late, my case would have been terrible. But I escaped. Every one can’t escape the same. That’s how they fall victim to bites and sad fully deaths.

The incident (about the girl) above has resulted in some action. According to officials they caught some 80 dogs from City Market area on the first day itself and 120 dogs later. They also admit that there are over 5000 stray dogs (the figures are only per the official count – what about unofficial count). The reason they site is that as per the Animal Control Act, an animal can be caught only if it causes violence and damage to humans and materials. This is outrageous. The dogs roaming in Bangalore are uncontrollable. They cause damage to humans directly and indirectly.

Hope the government does something about this…

Transportation in Bangalore

In Bangalore, transportation is worse than any other metros in India. One of the main reasons is due to the lack of subway system. While the construction of one is “on progress”, the dates for completion got extended for each phase making the metro subway system o on live by 2011 end. Other than this the basic mode of public transportation system would be BMTC buses. The BMTC buses are among the many first in India. They are the first to introduce the Volvo lone of Metroliner buses etc. However other dubious distinctions are like having the country’s highest fares. Normally in most parts of the state the common rate of government or public buses would be around Rs 0.5/km. In Bangalore however the rate comes to nearly Rs1/km. Also the rates for the ‘Volvo’ buses are higher than the normal BMTC buses. The rate per km would hover between Rs 2 – 3/km. There fore for traveling between ITPL and KempeGowda Bus Station (Majestic) it would cost Rs45-50. The distance is actually less than 30 km. When I travel home which is nearly 400 km away, I just had to pay Rs 190 for the high end Super Fast buses of Kerala. How can the BMTC justify these rates
